How to Use Bergamot Essential Oil
- Direct Palm Inhalation: Perhaps the easiest way to use bergamot oil is through a simple direct palm inhalation. Place a drop of this mood balancing oil in the palm of your hand, gently rub the palms together, bring them towards your face and take a deep inhalation. Repeat at any point in your day when you would like to feel uplifted and clarified. As a quick palm inhalation blend, do this with a drop of rose oil to discourage feelings of sadness or melancholy.
- Diffuser: Bergamot is one of our favorite oils to keep handy by the diffuser as its sweet fragrance blends well with almost any other oil — give it a try! It is universally loved by the whole family. We find that children especially find Bergamot enjoyable. Bergamot is a great year round fragrance for creating a fresh, welcoming home.
Please use safety precautions, because citrus and the sun are incompatible.
Citrus oils, including bergamot, are phototoxic, and can damage your skin if rubbed on the skin and exposed to sunlight.
Other Ways To Use Bergamot Essential Oil
- Apply a drop to support skin health, including the soothing of insect bites or itchy, red skin.
- Add several drops to a mister or spray bottle as a natural and pleasant insect repellent.

Ayurvedic Wisdom for Bergamot Essential Oil
According to the ancient healing system of Ayurveda, bergamot essential oil decreases problems caused by Vata and Kapha (the biological forces of wind and phlegm). By balancing "phlegm", bergamot oil helps to reduce sluggishness, complacency and melancholy. Its mood-uplifting qualities support heightened and brightened energy.

Interesting Bergamot Essential Oil Information
Bergamot essential oils are now commonly employed in the place of more expensive, dried bergamot peels. The oil is used in the food and confectionery industry as flavoring for liqueurs, aromatic teas, candies and candied fruits. The juice and skin of the fruit are also used in the agro-alimentary industry for the production of soft drinks, jellies and jams. Bergamot also gives Earl Grey tea its distinctive flavor.
Bergamot was the base for the original French "eau de cologne"; it is still used in many modern-day perfumes to fix the aromatic bouquet and to add a top note of freshness to the fragrance. In the 18th century, bergamot bark was shaped and dried into elaborately decorated boxes, which were highly prized among the French aristocracy.
Bergamot essential oil, a citrus, is not to be confused with the herb bee balm (Monarda didyma).
-
Safety Considerations for Bergamot Essential Oil
Though it is generally non-toxic and non-irritating, bergamot is extremely phototoxic. Do not expose skin to sunlight for 12 hours after application. Repeated use can result in contact sensitization (rotate between different oils). Do not use on children younger than 5 years of age. Do not take bergamot essential oil internally.

As there is a lack of an organized market or collection center for the oils, the oil cannot be certified as organic, in spite of it being grown organically. Cardamom starts bearing capsules three years after planting. Ancient Egyptians used cardamom in perfumes and incense and also chewed it to whiten their teeth. The serving of cardamom coffee is a traditional gesture of welcome in many Arab homes. Cardamom is also one of the key ingredients in Indian "chai" tea.

Ceylon Cinnamon Essential Oil Profile
This luscious cinnamon oil is distilled for Floracopeia from leaves on a sustainable 25-acre farm in Sri Lanka. The leaves are dried and steam-distilled in handmade equipment according to age-old local wisdom. Each distillation takes about 9 hours and, after separating the oil by hand, yields about 3kg of pure essential oil. The hydrosol is then reused for the next batch and the leaves, from which the oil has just been extracted, are immediately dried in the warm breeze and reused as fuel for the next batch, so the process is entirely self-sustaining.
The botanical name is cinnamomum zeylanicum, sometimes also called cinnamomum verum (“true cinnamon”). It is generally referred to as Ceylon cinnamon, Ceylon being the old, pre-independence name for Sri Lanka, the native home of true cinnamon. This is an important distinction as most of the cinnamon and cinnamon oil available in the US is actually cinnamomum cassia, which is a poor cousin of true cinnamon.
How to Use Ceylon Cinnamon Essential Oil
- Diffuser: Cinnamon warms the heart and mind with stimulating, delicious spice. Like other spices, this oil will help to open the breath and to relieve heaviness and lung discomfort. Diffuse a combination of one drop of cinnamon and 6 drops of mandarin oil to encourage relaxation and lift spirits.
Please see safety guidelines for cinnamon oil before use. Cinnamon oil should not be applied directly to the skin as it is extremely dermo-caustic. It can be applied in dilution or in blends to the palms for direct inhalation or massage or used in a diffuser.
Other Ways To Use Ceylon Cinnamon Essential Oil
- Cinnamon oil is well-placed in a wintertime massage oil blend. One drop of cinnamon in 0.5 oz of carrier oil can be massaged into legs, arms, and joints to warm and relax the body.
Ancient Wisdom for Ceylon Cinnamon Essential Oil
As a spice, cinnamon has been harvested and traded throughout the ages and has been documented in early medicinal texts as a valuable digestive tonic. The ancient Egyptians used cinnamon steeped in carrier oils for foot massages and as an herbal medicine for digestive problems. It also has a history of being used as an ingredient in love potions and incense.
Most often used as a flavoring agent in foods, cinnamon, in powdered form, has been a staple of international cuisine for centuries. Cinnamon has been studied for its supportive effects in promoting healthy blood sugar balance and insulin response.

How to Use Grapefruit Essential Oil
Grapefruit essential oil can be applied topically, as a compress, in the bath, through direct inhalation or used with a diffuser.
- Aromatic Bath: Add several drops of grapefruit oil to warm bath water for an uplifting and skin smoothing experience.
- Diffuser: Grapefruit is a universally appealing scent that is versatile and can blend with almost any oil. As with most citrus, it will uplift the mind and emotions and freshen the air to everyone’s liking. Reach for this oil to lighten up your diffuser blend if it has become too heavy, floral or medicinal smelling.
- Air Freshening: Add several drops grapefruit oil to a tissue and place in your car to rejuvenate and deodorize. Grapefruit, with its fresh citrus notes, will replace stale air with a scent of sunshine brightness.
Please use safety precautions, because citrus and the sun are incompatible. Citrus oils, including grapefruit, are phototoxic, and can damage your skin if rubbed on the skin and exposed to sunlight.
Aromatic Profile and Blending of Grapefruit Essential Oil
- Perfumery Note: Top note
- Odor: Fresh, sharp, bitter-fruity, refreshing
- Strength of Initial Aroma: Medium to strong
- Blends Well With: Basil oil, palmarosa oil and rosewood; florals such as chamomile oil, jasmine oil, lavender oil and ylang-ylang oil; citrus oils, including lime oil, mandarin oil, bergamot oil, neroli-petitgrain oil, neroli oil and lemon oil.
Interesting Grapefruit Essential Oil Information
Grapefruit is a hybrid fruit, thought to have derived from cross-pollinating the large, bitter pomelo with the sweet orange. It may have originated in Asia. It was not recognized as a distinct species until the 1800’s, and was commercially developed in the 1930’s in the state of Florida, which remains one of the world’s largest suppliers.
Some citrus oils are steam-distilled but most are expressed, or expeller pressed, by squeezing the fatty oil from the rind of the fruit. The expression method does not produce what are technically considered “essential” oils, though this is the best method of extraction in most cases. As the oil glands are embedded deep within the rind, making extraction more challenging, the yield of grapefruit oil is comparatively small. Grapefruit oil oxidizes quickly and should be refrigerated (or kept in a cool, dark place with the cap sealed tightly) to retain its full aromatic complement for about one year.
-
Safety Considerations for Grapefruit Essential Oil
Like other citrus oil, grapefruit is considered non-toxic and non-irritant. Being a member of the citrus family, grapefruit may be photo-toxic; therefore, avoid UV exposure for at least 8 hours after topical application. Do not take grapefruit essential oil internally.

Interesting Neroli Essential Oil Information
Neroli comes from the bitter orange tree, whose blossoms are picked and must immediately be put to distillation to avoid decay due to the delicacy of the flowers. Typically the blossoms are distilled first, producing neroli essential oil. The water-soluble component is bottled as orange blossom water. Next follows distillation of the leaves, resulting in petitgrain oil. The rind of the fruit, at maturity, is expeller-pressed to produce bitter orange oil. One hundred kilograms of flowers produces a maximum of 1,000 grams (1 kilogram) of neroli oil, making it a very precious and costly oil. Owing to its high cost, neroli oil is very commonly adulterated, either with petitgrain or synthetics, which compromises both the therapeutic qualities and aromatic profile.
Neroli oil is used in expensive colognes and perfumes, and was given its name after the Countess of Nerola, an Italian Princess from the 17th century who used it to perfume her gloves and bathwater. The history of the tree itself, however, predates this association, as Arab conquerors are known to have been cultivating the plant in the 10th and 11th centuries. One study sites that the inhalation of neroli oil has sedative effects on mice, which is greatest during first 30 min of inhalation. David Crow on Neroli: ❝Neroli is the fragrance of orange trees blossoming under the Moroccan and Tunisian sun. It is the fragrance that greets farmers as they begin another spring day of harvesting, gently plucking the tiny golden gems that shine from inside green citrus foliage. Many factors will influence the quality of the neroli oil: each blossom must be plucked when it is just starting to open; the buds must be gathered only on warm sunny days; the flowers cannot be bruised; leaflets and petioles must not be mixed in. By the end of the day, the clothing and weather-aged hands of the dark-skinned harvesters will be saturated with an intoxicating aroma desired by queens and empresses, sheiks and maharajas.❞

Interesting Silver Fir Essential Oil Information
An oleo-resin is obtained from blister-like swellings in the bark. The resin extracted from it, called "Strasburg turpentine", is used in perfumery, medicine and for caulking ships. Oil of turpentine is an important solvent in the paint industry. The residue, known as 'rosin oil', is used in making varnishes, lacquers and carbon black. The resin is tapped from 60 to 80 year old trees.
Many conifer oils, due to harvesting methods, are subject to contamination such as oil and gas from chain saws, wood chips and branches, which add unwanted resins, petroleum byproducts and turpentine to the final product. The oils that we offer come from either wild-harvested or organically cultivated trees, using only the tips and needles, which are hand cut with non-lubricated shears and then distilled in a certified organic still. This guarantees that the distillation produces only the cleanest, most refined oils possible.
